My time stops in Netherland

It was a cold foggy day in Eindhoven…  “Silent hill” will be a perfect description for it, the visibility distance only about 50 meters. From the library I could see just a few zombies outside.. err.. I mean a few people outside.  I read from the Internet that all of the flights from/to Netherlands were cancelled. It was not a good weather to be outside anyway.

Fog

My daydreaming stopped when suddenly my friend asked me about a novel which he read, it was godfather. The novel was made in 1969, the book author who used to be an idealistic turned into pop-novel-author who actually knew what  the reader wanted.

Then, the direction of the conversation changed to comparing old english, and old Netherland, we found similarity words between old English and Netherland nowadays. Suddenly he said something which made me realized something, Dutch people who lives in South Africa are using the old Netherland languange, since they don’t interact with their home anymore.

It’s been more than 2 years since I left Indonesia, almost of my time are used to interact with non-Indonesian. My habit begin change to be like Dutch. Before coming to Netherland I never make an appointment in degree of minute, for instance: “Let’s meet at the train station at 13.55” . It influenced me that much.. to me… almost no incidental activity during 24-7, there is no “Ok.. let’s go to the A house, maybe he is at home”.

Everything should be systematic and scheduled(argh.. so Dutch.. ). Indonesian people see me as too strict and full of planning. Living in a full appointment is the daily life in Netherland, even if we want to cut our hair, we have to make appointment first, people in Netherland call it “afspraak”.

On my daily routine… English is the daily languange(not Dutch..hehe… :D) . The more I interact using English, my Bahasa Indonesia begin to deteriorate little by little, only essential parts are used. When I call my friends from Indonesia they start saying “Why you are using formal Indonesian?” I said “Ëh.. really.. ? I thought I use spoken languange”

When people  start talking about “Maicih”  and “Ayu Ting-ting”  I say  “What kind of things are they? ” It does not stop until that part… When some celebrities  using some expression such as “Alhamdulillah sesuatu banget yah… “, Galau”, those expression began to spread like wildfire, person to person, including my friends. At that time I even have to Google to know what they are talking about, some words, some phrases. We’re still talking with the same languange right?   -_____-”

Another moment which makes me feel like a foreigner  when My friends returned from Indonesia for vacation and told a story of  Yogyakarta(my hometown) and the people. I couldn’t believe how my hometown and the people had already change that much.

I think my time has already stop ticking when my feet stepped on Netherland, and another different clock is ticking inside me. You may say that I’m an Indonesian, but an Indonesian who lives in 2009. I hope when I got back I can adjust my time into the current time again 😀
